Kankavli College, Kankavli has been established on 15th June, 1972 with the modest strength of 111 students. Majority of the pass-outs, especially the lady students had been deprieved of the college education as they cannot afford the higher education due to remote areas, poor financial conditions and some family problems. So the institution has opened the doors for higher education at affordable cost. Though the college was on grant-in-aid basis, the problem of buildings and other infrastructural facilities was a challenge for the Management. However, the Management constructed the required classrooms, Sanitary Blocks, Canteen and Science Laboratories and provided the infrastructure to satisfy the genuine need of the student community in particular and the staff in general.
In the year 2008-09, the institution has introduced the Science stream on grant-in-aid basis with specialized subjects such as Mathematics, Computer Science, Botany, Microbiology and Chemistry. This was the milestone in the history of the institution. Needless to add, the institution has Junior College Arts, Commerce, Science streams with Information Technology and Computer Science as special subjects. Besides, the institute has four Vocational Courses viz. Purchasing and Store Keeping, Travel and Tourism, Auditing and Accounting and Office Management at the +2 Stage. Presently, the college has the B.A., B.Com., B.Sc., B.Sc. with Computer Science, B.Com. (Accounting and Finance), B.M.S. Self Finance Courses and the NCC optional subject for Foundation Course for the B.A., B.Com. and B.Sc. classes. Moreover, the college has M.A. (Entire in English, Marathi, Hindi, Economics, History) and M.Com. Accounting and Auditing as specialization at the PG levels since 1991 onward to satisfy the need of the district degree holders. In addition to these, the YCMOU M.B.A. Post Graduation Course has been started since 2012-13 along with the YCMOU B.A. and B.Com. UG degree courses since 1991 onward to provide informal education to the needy service men and dropouts who had been deprieved of the Higher Education. Presently, there are 23 regular faculty members on Grant-in-Aid base whereas 26 faculty members have been working on contract base for the non-grantable divisions and the Self Finance Courses at UG level and 23 visiting faculty members for PG level.
